Maria Lionza is a pagan deity, a central image of worship, deeply rooted in the Venezuelan symbolic system. The figure of the mother in Latin America occupies a sacred place. In any context, our society is a matrixist – orbit around powerful, central and authoritative women – in which parents are usually absent. This characteristic opens the way to the figuration of women mother-fathers, who operate their governments within a patriarchal cultural system. In this series I use the image of María Lionza to explore the mother’s archetype in Latin America.

María Lionza es una deidad pagana, imagen central de culto, muy arraigada en el sistema simbólico venezolano. La figura de la madre en latinoamérica ocupa un lugar sagrado. En cualquier contexto, nuestra sociedad es matricentrista —orbita alrededor de mujeres poderosas, centrales y de autoridad— en la cual los padres usualmente están ausentes. Esta característica abre paso a la figuración de unas mujeres madres-padres, quienes operan sus gobiernos dentro de un sistema cultural patriarcal. En esta serie utilizo la imagen de María Lionza para explorar el arquetipo de la madre en Latinoamérica.
